Kathleen Boland's home is up for sale. It is immediately around the corner from the site of the accident. She was a bit of a stubborn, isolated woman who was knowledgeable (good at Jeopardy!) and kind to animals. Her only friends were tavern friends, and her family is Up North somewhere. Never knew her to get any visitors or have any outside activities. Not the sort to go to a restaurant or a show. I don't think she realized how drunk a few beers could get her. She easily could have taken a bus to her favorite tavern, (the stop was in front of her house) or found a new tavern within a block or two of her home. She should have known much better than to have been driving. She was a morning drinker, and I don't think I ever saw her after sundown. Probably in retrospect she was never entirely sober for over 20 years. Woke up and went to bed drunk.
I wondered why she didn't come up with the $20,000 bail, but I gather she had been living on the equity of the home already, and there is not much left. The home was already for sale by the time of the accident; I gather she was considering moving to some kind of housing where the rent would be a percentage of her income. This is no longer an issue.
A friend is watching after the dog, and I guess will take care of disposing of her effects.
Altogether an unremarkable woman, up to that fateful Friday. I am certain, though, that she is deeply repentant. She is the sort of person who will have this on her mind every moment for the rest of her life. She had quite a bit of experience in judging others, and now the mirror is on her.
I saw her about a week before the accident. I went into the bar during a weekend afternoon -- not to drink, but to look for somebody who wasn't there, as it turned out. As I left she said "hi." I returned the hello, without breaking my stride and left. An unremarkable moment, but never to be forgotten now.
Finally, I was deeply touched by the letter to the newspaper from Mikey's friends.
I commend you for your commitment to your friend and to your vigilance.
I regret that I must be anonymous, however I felt this information might be of some help. My best wishes to you all. Don't drink and drive.
